”The Amazing Race” Reality Show Style Fundraiser
The Amazing Race has been one of my favorite television shows for
several seasons. In this game, teams of two follow treasure hunt
type clues and compete with each other to get to the finish line
first each week. The team that comes in last each show is booted
off the race. The team that finishes in first place in the end wins
one million dollars. It’s quite an exciting show, and makes me wish
I was competing myself!
So you may be wondering, what does a reality show have to do with
fundraising? Boy, I’m glad you asked!
What if you create a fundraiser event based on similar rules as
the show? Each team of two would have to pay a fee to be entered
into the race. I would suggest $100 per team of two, but the exact
amount would depend on your prizes and your market.
People will enter the contest for several reasons. Some will join
because of the prizes, some to support your cause, and others just
for the adventure and fun of it. You would need to market this event
to all three motivations!
Get a great prize donated from a local business for the grand prize.
A trip, home entertainment system or maybe even a new car – whatever
would be a popular prize, big enough to draw adventure seekers in
your area.
“The Amazing Race” show is drawn out over a number of weeks, with
contestants traveling all over the world. Your fundraiser event,
could too, could be held one day each week, over a series
of 3-4 weeks.
However for a simpler structure (and less organization headaches)
it could be a one day event, with one race leg in the morning, break
for lunch and then the second and final round in the afternoon.
However you split up the race, only a predetermined number of contestants
will advance to the next round.
Now your fundraiser not only raises money from the entry fee, but
at the day and time of the last leg of the race, you have a celebration
at the finish line. After all, friends and family of the contestants
will want to see them win, right? You can have an awards ceremony,
food booths, carnival games, a concert, or whatever would create
a festive atmosphere to top of this
fundraiser.
The success of this fundraiser hinges on: - prize donations, one
large prize and optional runner-up prizes - widespread publicity
ahead of time to get enough teams - media coverage, newspaper, TV
and radio - proper planning all the many small details
If you could secure one big corporate sponsor, such as an auto
dealership or retail store, you would gain a prize and location
for the finale, and the business would get free advertising. (You
would also need to negotiate with media outlets for free air space.)
You would also of course create the game rules, including what
resources can and cannot be used during the race, i.e. cell phones,
GPRS, etc. The clues, locations and specifics regarding
timing would also need to be worked out. Here again you could entice
local businesses to come on board as race destination locations,
and request that they make a contribution to your charity as a corporate
sponsor.
